Cloth Diaper Checklist

Not sure what you need? This checklist should help you get started with your purchase, or setting up your diaper registry.

How Many Diapers?

There are two factors to consider in determining how many diapers you will need for your little one.
  1. The age of your child.
  2. How often you want to wash diapers.
These estimates are based on washing every other day. You may find that you need more or less than the number indicated based on how often you want to wash and also your own baby's needs.

Cloth Diapers

Newborn to 4 months - 24 - 30 Diapers
4 to 10 months - 20 - 24 Diapers
Toddler (10 months to potty training) - 15 - 24 Diapers

Inserts/Doublers
  • Every pocket diaper you purchase will require an insert. When you change pocket diapers you do not reuse the pocket or insert - both pieces go into your diaper pail to be washed.
  • For extra absorbency for naps, longer outings and night time I recommend 4-8 hemp inserts/doublers.
  • I always use a Pocket Diaper or a Pocket All In One/Hybrid stuffed with hemp for bed time. Most AIOs alone are not sufficient for night time use. For some babies adding an extra insert (typically hemp) to a Pocket Diaper will suffice. Heavy wetters may require products specifically made for night time like the DryBees Night Times or Super Do Inserts.

2-4 Dozen Cloth Wipes
Plan for one per change and then a few extras for big messes. I have A LOT because I like having sets for bath time and messy faces/hands after eating!

2-4 Wet Bags
I have two regular/medium sized wet bags so that I can have a clean one each day. If you are not out and about daily you may be fine with one wet bag. I also have large ones which I use mostly for longer outings/day trips. You may want to opt for a large bag if you have more than one child in diapers, or are potty training.

A small wet bag is great for premoistened wipes on the go. I general moisten a few wipes with our wipes solution, then wrap a few dry wipes around the premoistened to prevent wicking.

Wet bags are also great for swimsuits, soiled bibs when dining out, and gym clothing.

1-2 Diaper Pail Liners
Again, it is nice to have two of these in your rotation so you always have one clean, but it is not a necessity if you can find a spot for your soiled diapers while one is being washed. The Wahmies Pail Liner fits nicely into most kitchen trash buckets. The Doorknob Diaper Pail is a great option for those with limited space. We take the doorknob diaper pail when we are traveling since it doesn't take up much space at hotels or visiting family. It will also fit in most kitchen trash buckets if you choose not to hang it on the doorknob.
